2012 Dec 5

Jessica Hughes of Union Hall, Va. has spent the fall semester at Emory & Henry participating in the challenging Honors Program offered at Emory & Henry College.

The faculty of Emory & Henry College established the Honors Program in 2009 to provide an enhanced academic experience for the College's best students. The program includes approximately 70 students distributed across four class years. Members of the first class are now seniors and are preparing their honors thesis or honors projects to graduate with the College's first honors diplomas in May 2013.

Students in the program ...

• are from eleven states and two foreign countries

• carry a cumulative GPA of 3.73

• have studied abroad in 15 different countries

• have earned prestigious summer internships as well as coveted appointments to semester-study programs in the Fermi National Laboratory and at the State Supreme Court of Virginia

• include institution-nominated candidates for the Rhodes Scholarship, the Truman Scholarship, the Mitchell Scholarship, and the Fulbright Student Fellows Program.

Benefits for the program include a $1,000 scholarship each year above any other scholarship received, placement in an Honors dorm with space to converse and study, complete with computers and a library. Honors students are also able to register early for classes to ensure they get the classes they want.

Each student is also given a minimum $2,000 academic stipend to help pay for study and research-related travel. Students travel to New York during their first year to get ready for travel opportunities each year to places such as France, China, Scotland, Ireland, England, Brazil, India and Greece. Throughout the year, honors students attend plays, concerts, operas and other cultural events.

The Honors Steering Committee and Honors advisors also help students apply for prestigious scholarships. Honors students qualify for the National Collegiate Honors Council approved Honors Diploma, which shows that students are prepared for the very best law, medical or graduate schools.

The Emory & Henry College Honors Program complements the College's liberal arts mission by offering academically talented students an opportunity to "Increase in Excellence" by engaging in an intense academic exploration.

The Honors Program strives to recruit, engage, develop and retain outstanding students who possess extraordinary intellectual promise, a strong academic background, broad extracurricular interests, and leadership abilities.

Students are offered unique curricular opportunities which challenge them to think critically, logically and creatively in order to realize their fullest potential. They are encouraged to participate in service to the community and to be actively involved in college life.
